If you’ve never had an avocado margarita, you’re in for a treat.
Today I’m sharing a recipe inspired by Cinco de Mayo on Friday… Avocado Margaritas. I know, I know, it sounds a little weird right? Hear me out. This avocado margarita was inspired by one of my favorite spots here in Nashville.
Just like avocados add extra thickness and creaminess to smoothies, they do the same for margaritas sans all the sugar and of course, this can be made as a mocktail or alcohol-free if you’d like. The result is a refreshing and creamy take on the margarita that’s naturally sweetened with honey and orange juice. Keep reading for the recipe and I can’t wait for you to give this a go this summer!
Honestly, I was never into margaritas; they were super sweet, way too boozy for my liking, and loaded with sugar. It wasn’t until my love, who is a cocktail genius and works in the hospitality industry, made up his signature margarita and it was lovely. It was tangy, slightly sweet, and just right. I even make his “recipe” sans tequila some days just for a refreshing lime sparkling water kinda-thing. Anyways, we were experimenting with cocktail recipes one night and I had the wave of inspiration to create an avocado margarita that 1) tasted delicious, 2) could be made alcohol free, 4) was party friendly, and 4) was a healthier alternative to sugary loaded drinks surfacing this weekend (and summer)!
Before we get into the details of this recipe and why avocados rock, check out the blog post I wrote about alcohol 101 just in case you have any questions on how this fits into a healthy lifestyle because it can if you choose to. It’s all about balance baby. Onto avocados, there are tons of reasons why avocados are awesome…
1 avocado has about 14 grams of gut-friendly fiber which is amazing for keeping our digestion healthy and blood sugars balanced. Those blood sugar balancing capabilities also help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and manage our weight on multiple levels, including keeping us feeling full. Avocados contain less than 1g of sugar per ounce, which is the least amount of sugar per serving of any other fresh fruit. They also contain about 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, making them nutrient dense for such a small volume. Plus about 75% of the fat found in avocados is unsaturated monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are important for heart health, again balancing those blood sugars, and healthy hormones.
From a culinary standpoint, when you blend an avocado with this margarita recipe, it’s silky smooth, cold/refreshing, and delicious! Just like most cocktails, enjoy them immediately after you make them and you can make them in a large batch just be sure to serve right away.
