AquaTru Water Filter Review and Recommendations For Water Filters

The AquaTru Water Filter Review

Drinking more water is incredibly beneficial to your overall health. Did you know the body is made up of about 55-60% water?

Water is responsible for every process in the human body which is pretty amazing for something that many of us take for granted. If you’re not drinking enough water you may not be giving your body enough fuel to combat everyday stress, fight fatigue, keep your digestion moving, your metabolism efficient, supple skin, along with many others. Whether it’s experiencing sweating in the summer heat or dry skin in the winter chill, water is key to keeping our bodies healthy on a cellular level.

Registered Dietitian Approved Water Filters

As a Registered Dietitian not only professionally coaching thousands in my career but also personally, the importance of water comes up time and time again with our Wellness Coaching clients.

As an RD and author of the Nutrition Stripped Cookbook — my mission is to teach others how to apply the science of nutrition and practice the art of healthy living by creating long-term health change out of daily practices. This includes sleeping well, eating well, moving your body in a way that feels good to you, and of course, drinking plenty of water!

Health Benefits Of Drinking Water

In the human body, water has a role in:

  • metabolism
  • cellular membrane function
  • regulating our body temperature (sweating is a great example)
  • aiding in digestion to breakdown foods
  • helps deliver oxygen throughout your entire working body
  • aids in digestion from saliva production (which also houses digestive enzymes)
  • lubricates joints, flushes unwanted toxins from the body (mostly in urine and bowel movements)
  • helps our beautiful brains create hormones and neurotransmitters
  • keeps our mucosal membranes moist (think of your lung and digestive tissues)
  • transports nutrients from our foods (especially water-soluble vitamins)
  • keeps our cells rejuvenated, reproducing, and surviving

Why You Should Care About Water Quality

There’s no doubt that drinking enough water is absolutely essential to overall health, and it all starts with picking the right water filter.

Water purification systems work in many different ways to remove harmful toxins, chemicals, and contaminants from your water. While some physically separate sediment and solid particles, others push liquids through a semi-permeable membrane or use a combination of heat and light to kill off microorganisms.

With so many types of water filters on the market, however, it can be tricky to determine which one is the best fit for you. This in-depth article will take a closer look at a few of the most popular water purification systems available, along with the benefits and drawbacks of each, to help you make an informed decision.

Why Do You Need A Water Filter?

Do you know what’s in your tap water? Filling up your cup directly from the sink may seem harmless enough, but if you don’t have a filter installed, there’s no telling what you could be drinking.

In fact, a 2009 analysis conducted by the Environmental Working Group found 316 contaminants in the water delivered to the public, 202 of which have no regulated safety standards. Among the contaminants found in the water supply were chemicals like metolachlor (an herbicide), Radon (a radioactive, cancer-causing gas), and acetone (a flammable liquid used in cleaning) (1).

Other dangerous compounds may also be present, including heavy metals, toxins, and endocrine disruptors. These compounds can throw hormonal balance out of whack and contribute to a slew of negative side effects, including developmental delays, impairments in immune function, neurological problems, and reproductive issues (2). Using a filter can extract these compounds and help purify your water to ensure that it’s safe, healthy, and chemical-free. Water filters can also improve the taste and smell of your water, which makes it easier to stay hydrated and drink more water throughout the day.

What about using bottled water instead? Although water bottles are increasingly popular, there are a number of negative side effects associated with the use of bottled water. Not only are water bottles pricey, but they’re also made of plastic, which can be detrimental to the environment. Furthermore, there’s no guarantee that bottled water is any better than the water from your tap.

The National Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group, conducted a four-year review of the bottled water industry to evaluate the overall quality and safety standards. According to the organization, about 25% of bottled water contains tap water that may or may not have been further treated. Additionally, while the majority of bottled water evaluated was safe and clean, about 22% of brands tested contained chemicals above-established safety limits in at least one sample (3).

Investing in a quality water purification system is the best way to limit your exposure to harmful chemicals and keep your drinking water clean and free of contaminants.

Why Reverse Osmosis Filters Are The Best

Often considered the best water filter option by many because of its widespread availability and ease of use, the reverse osmosis system is a purification process in which water passes through a semipermeable membrane to remove contaminants like heavy metals and toxins. The reverse osmosis water filter is popular because it can be installed as a simple under sink water filter along with a faucet fixture, which makes it an easy and convenient option. AquaTru, in particular, is a great brand we love and recommend here at NS that produces countertop model filters that are easy to use and require no installation.

There are several drawbacks to consider for this water filtration system, however. For starters, it can waste quite a bit of water compared to other methods. It also requires careful maintenance as the pores can become easily clogged, and filters need to be replaced regularly to ensure proper function.

Keep in mind that reverse osmosis strips many minerals from water. While this is not usually a significant concern, as most of us get these important micronutrients from other food sources, many recommend using trace mineral drops or other filters to help re-mineralize your water. Additionally, while some claim that reverse osmosis can “leach” minerals from your body, there is no evidence to support this, and it is considered safe by organizations like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

One of my favorite models is the AquaTru, which is a countertop water purification system that purifies one gallon of water in about 12-15 minutes. It’s the only countertop water filtration system of its kind available on the market. Think of it as one of your pitcher-style water filters, but hundreds of times more powerful.

AquaTru uses a four-stage osmosis process to remove 78 contaminants from your water, which is the same process used by all the major water bottle brands. Basically, that means that it makes your tap water just as good and pure as bottled water without having to use plastic bottles.

Things to Consider

If your city’s tap water isn’t drinkable, or if you’re concerned about the level of lead or other chemicals that may be coming out of your faucet, you probably want another water option. If like me, you avoid plastic water bottles, you might benefit from a product like AquaTru.

If you know that your tap water is completely safe and chemical-free, then AquaTru probably isn’t for you. Similarly, if you only need to filter your water temporarily (because you’re traveling, on vacation, or having plumbing work done) you can probably make do with water bottles or a portable water filter instead of purchasing AquaTru. And if you aren’t concerned about the contents of your water, but just want it to taste better, then a pitcher-type water purifier is probably fine.

AquaTru is ideal for households whose tap water isn’t as clean as it can be to drink. It’s also for anyone who is concerned about the potential levels of lead, chromium 6, drug residue, pesticides, and fertilizers that are often found in tap water. And if you’re someone who spends a lot of money on bottled water, then AquaTru may help save you money and support the environment by lessening single-use plastic waste.

Before buying AquaTru, consider how serious you are about needing genuinely purified water on a long-term basis. If that’s you, then AquaTru might be a good solution for you. The AquaTru water filter is definitely for someone who’s looking to kick their bottled water habit. It’s also for anyone whose tap water is known to be unsafe, or for someone who’s concerned about the chemicals that may be in their water.

Pros:

  • Widely available
  • Easy to use
  • Convenient
  • Removes the most contaminants amongst other water filters
  • Water tastes very clean
  • Save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year compared to purchasing bottled water
  • Unlike pitcher water filters, AquaTru removes virtually all the chemicals from your tap water
  • AquaTru doesn’t require any installation and doesn’t require carrying around heavy bottles or filters to change every few months

Cons:

  • Wastes some water
  • Requires regular maintenance
  • Removes minerals from water
  • Expense. AquaTru is definitely more expensive than some other water filters on the market today.
  • Space. The AquaTru filter fits on your countertop, but at 14” high x 14” deep x 12” wide, it may present a problem for those with truly limited kitchen or counter space
  • Some reviews say that the base leaks sometimes

Features and Benefits

Are You Using A Water Filter or Water Purifier?

Another option for water filters include pitchers, water faucet filters, fridge filters, charcoal sticks, and more. These options can range anywhere from $5-$50, which is a pro compared to the more expensive models like the reverse osmosis AquaTru.

Water filters remove sediment, cloudiness, and larger particles from your water such as chlorine, along with improving the taste and overall appearance of the water. Water filters can be a great choice for you if you’re just looking to improve to look or taste of your water, or you’re only concerned about chemicals like chlorine, or if you’re looking for an affordable unit.

Water purification systems make water as clean as possible, freeing the water of all chemicals along with improving the taste, appearance, and overall reducing the amount of long-term spending with water bottles. These purification systems are more expensive because they’re entire systems that purify the water, not just filter them.

What Water Purification Systems Get Rid Of

Reverse osmosis systems like AquaTru are certified to remove 78 toxic chemicals, including:

  • Lead
  • Chromium 6
  • Chlorine
  • Chloramine
  • Fluoride
  • PFOA and PFOS (chemicals that are used to make carpets, clothing, and other fabrics; they’re also used to fight fires from airplanes and in a lot of industrial contexts
  • Prescription drug residue
  • Fertilizers
  • Pesticides

AquaTru even provides a copy of their certified test results, so if you’re curious about whether the AquaTru actually removes 78 toxic chemicals (and what those chemicals are), you can read through the report.

Four-Step Osmosis Technology

The reason that AquaTru is able to get so much out of your water is that it uses a four-step purification process.

  1. First, water goes through the sediment pre-filter, which gets all of the dirt, dust, sediment, and cloudiness out of your water.
  2. Next, it goes through the activated carbon pre-filter — that’s where 99% of chlorine and chloramines get taken out of your water.
  3. The third filter is what removes chemicals like lead and arsenic
  4. The fourth filter gets rid of chemicals that come from the homes and businesses around you — things like pesticides, fertilizers, and drug residue (including prescription drugs like antidepressants and hormones from birth control).

Long-Term Use

The AquaTru is definitely not the cheapest model on the market, so you want to be sure that if you purchase it, you’re actually getting your money’s worth. If you consume a lot of water or live an active lifestyle, then this might be a great model for you.

Just to put the long-term use in perspective: the average cost for a 16.9 oz. bottle of water is $1.99 and the average cost for 16.9 oz. of water from the AquaTru is only $0.29. For example, if you drink a water bottle per day, you might spend the same amount in a longer-term solution in just three months.

Installation and Size

Most reverse osmosis water purification systems need to be installed and the price point is more expensive with the upkeep and installation. The great thing about having a countertop model like the AquaTru is it’s just as easy to use as a basic pitcher filter.

By simply plugging the unit in, the installation takes about 3 minutes. The unit itself can sit on most countertops, the size is 14” tall, 14” deep, and 12” wide.

I don’t have a huge kitchen, but with a little bit of rearranging, I was able to find a spot for it on my counter. If I had a small studio apartment, or somewhere with less counter space, I might have had some trouble, though.

Another bonus with the installation is with the filters — you only have to change them from 6 months to 2 years depending on use. Also, the machine itself will tell you when you need to change them which is great, unlike many water filters where you have to keep tabs on the time you put them in.

Verdict — Is It NS Approved?

Yes!

The AquaTru is well suited for someone who:

  • Doesn’t have safe tap water available
  • Is otherwise serious about ensuring the quality of their water
  • Is trying to find a replacement for drinking bottled water
  • Wants a high-quality water purifier, but doesn’t want to deal with bulky units or installation and plumbing

AquaTru is an incredibly useful product. Small enough to fit on your countertop, it still removes over 75 chemicals from a gallon of water in just 12-15 minutes. Its ease-of-use, portability, and thorough purification power are some of its best features.
