Today, I wanted to share a super-simple refreshing Strawberry Lemonade Fresca made with that will keep you hydrating your body all day long because it tastes so good! Added bonus, it contains no artificial sweeteners (!) and is loaded with fiber from special ingredients. Read more to refresh yourself this summer!

Sans the sugar

For me and so many of you, lemonade has always been symbolic of summer—and for good reason! It’s refreshing, keeps you hydrated in the summer heat, tastes delicious and is bright from the citrus fruit.

My love of lemonade dates back to my childhood when my mom used to make (sorry for saying this mom) the sugary-est yet very tasty lemonade from sugar, water and lemons. It was super-sweet, and I was super…hyper. Fast-forward decades into adulthood and add a masters of science in clinical nutrition to the mix, and we have a case for going sugar-free when it comes to endless lemonade refills. To clear the air here, if you haven’t checked out the NS philosophy on sugar, check out this guide to hidden sugars and carbohydrates 101. I encourage you to get away from labeling sugar or anything as “bad.” Avoiding or limiting foods or nutrients is all about the context of our diet and lifestyle. With that said, there are always ideal and optimal choices that can be made instead, and, in my case, I like to keep it as low-sugar as possible (as in no refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, etc.). If I do use sugar, I like to get it from the real deal, aka non-refined sugars like maple syrup, honey, stevia and coconut sugar, and I’ll only use them in very small amounts.

So, in my quest for a lower-sugar lemonade, I pulled out my new favorite line of goodies from my pals at True Citrus, the makers of unique, crystallized citrus-based products, and boom, a simple, healthy, lemonade was made in literally two minutes.

I put a little spin on the True Lemon Strawberry Lemonade to add some fiber and extra nutrition to this summertime treat. The True Citrus lemonade and limeade products are made with real flavor from real fruit, have just 10 calories per serving, and are sweetened with stevia leaf and a light touch of sugar. Since they use stevia instead of refined sugars and syrups like other beverages, it has only one gram of sugar and no artificial sweeteners, flavors, preservatives, gluten or sodium. They’re perfect for when you want a little more flavor in your beverage or a summertime treat. This has been my favorite refreshing drink as of late and hope you guys enjoy this too!

  • 3 fresh mint leaves
  • Optional garnishes: more fresh mint
  • Note: make it sparkling by using sparkling water instead of filtered water!
Instructions
  1. Using your fingers, break the mint and gently bruise it before putting into a serving glass. Next, add all ingredients into the glass. Stir for 2 minutes until the chia seeds have absorbed some of the water. Garnish with more mint or add ice if you’d like it chilled further. Enjoy chilled.

Tip: to make several batches at a time, simply 2x or 4x the recipe, store in a glass pitcher with a tightly closed lid and stir upon serving. Keep for 4 days in the refrigerator.

For a different flavor combo, you can make a limeade version with less tang by using the same recipe but subbing the for True Lemon Strawberry Lemonade for the True Lime Black Cherry Limeade. It’s made with the same simple ingredients and real fruit flavor like the lemonade version, with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives, and sweetened with only stevia and a light touch of sugar.
